Menpan RB: AI is a double-edged sword

In facing the threat of AI-supported crimes, it is important to implement strong regulatory principles, including transparency, accountability, data privacy, and security.

The utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to enhance productivity across various sectors, including governance. AI has been proven to improve the efficiency of public services by providing more accurate information and tailoring services to user needs. It can also provide various types of services at more affordable costs, strengthening community relationships and increasing user satisfaction.

However, Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PAN RB) Abdullah Azwar Anas stated that in the implementation of AI technology, there are certainly challenges, including data security and trust in information.

"This AI is like a double-edged sword. On one side, it brings positive impacts, but on the other side, it can also bring negative consequences. Risk management and strict regulations are needed to mitigate potential negative impacts to ensure public safety," said Minister Anas during his keynote speech at the Seminar for Bachelor Students of the Police Science Institute (STIK) Class 81/WWS, in Jakarta, on Tuesday (02/04) as quoted from the press release of Menpan RB.

Anas stated that in facing threats of AI-supported crimes, it is important to apply strong regulatory principles, including transparency, accountability, data privacy, and security. AI should also be designed inclusively, prioritizing social equality and adhering to ethical principles.

"Thus, we can ensure that the use of AI is not only safe and responsible but also beneficial to society at large," said the former head of the Government Procurement Policy Agency.

Future crimes supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI) pose increasingly complex challenges. Threats such as the spread of fake content and the misuse of AI automation for malicious purposes present significant challenges in ensuring public safety.

According to Anas, this is where the role of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) as an integral part of the government becomes crucial. "The Police not only play a role in providing security and order but can also contribute to supporting digital transformation by effectively implementing information and communication technology in its operations," he added.

Furthermore, the utilization of AI technology within the scope of governance can be key to making appropriate decisions and policies. To realize this, the government is taking steps by continuing the implementation of the Electronic-Based Government System (Presidential Regulation No. 95/2018) and Presidential Regulation No. 82/2023 concerning the Acceleration of Digital Transformation and Integration of National Digital Services.

"The government is currently accelerating the formation of GovTech, which will accelerate the digital transformation of Integrated Services. For example, the implementation of Single Sign-on to a secure national portal to counter data leaks and repetitive self-data entry," concluded Anas. (IN)
