Slow Internet, Government to Limit Minimum Internet Speed to 100 Mbps.

Indonesia has long been considered a country with slow internet speed. To address this, the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kementerian Kominfo) plans to implement a policy for all fixed broadband internet providers in closed networks, prohibiting them from selling internet services below 100 Mbps.

Currently, the internet has become a basic necessity for society, including in Indonesia. However, the fixed broadband internet speed in Indonesia is still far from satisfactory. According to data from Ookla's Speedtest Global Index quoted on Sunday (28/1/2024), Indonesia ranks 126th out of 178 countries in terms of fixed broadband internet speed.

The data also specifies that Indonesia has a fixed broadband download speed of 27.87 Mbps, upload speed of 16.85 Mbps, and latency of 7ms. For comparison, the fixed broadband internet speed in Indonesia is still lower than Singapore, which has an internet speed of 270.62 Mbps. Indonesia's internet speed is also lower than Thailand's at 221.32 Mbps.

Even the Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo), Budi Arie Setiadi, stated that the government is paying special attention to internet speed. According to his statement, Budi explained that Indonesia's internet speed is still low at 24.9 Mbps. This speed is below that of the Philippines, Cambodia, and Laos. He mentioned that Indonesia only outperforms Myanmar and Timor Leste in Southeast Asia.

The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) itself plans to set the minimum fixed broadband internet speed in Indonesia at 100 Mbps. This plan was announced by Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi during his visit to the Balai Monitor (Balmon) Spectrum Frequency Radio (SFR) Class I in Palembang a week ago, as quoted from mass media.

The decision to increase internet speed is driven by the relatively low internet speed conditions in Indonesia. According to the official Kominfo website, the current fixed broadband internet speed in Indonesia is 27.87 Mbps. Budi said, 'The internet is a basic necessity. Why are we still selling 5 Mbps, 10 Mbps for fixed broadband? Why not directly sell 100 Mbps? That's why I will create a policy to require them to sell 100 Mbps.'

However, as of now, there has been no further discussion regarding which regions in Indonesia will be designated in relation to this policy plan.
