Supporting Strategic Sectors, Indonesia Strengthens the AI Technology Ecosystem

The utilization of AI has become a necessity, especially in strategic sectors. Therefore, the Indonesian government feels the need to strengthen the AI technology ecosystem.

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to support the development of strategic sectors has gained attention worldwide. Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Nezar Patria stated that the Republic of Indonesia is highly committed to responding positively to the use of AI technology and strengthening the national AI ecosystem.

"For example, in the economic, health, education, and other sectors. So, these achievements need continuous support because AI will be a benchmark for mastering digital technology in the next 5 to 10 years," he said after attending the Workshop Planning Contributions and Important Stakeholders to Include in the Global UNESCO Forum on AI at the Brdo Congress Centre, Slovenia, on Sunday (04/02/2024) local time, as quoted from the Ministry of Communication and Information press release.

Deputy Minister Nezar Patria evaluated that the development and growth of the AI ecosystem have positive impacts, especially in terms of usage that can facilitate and assist strategic sectors. He noted that Indonesia's readiness in AI is still in the development stage. Therefore, the Ministry of Communication and Information is adopting models developed in advanced countries.

"We adopt several foundation models, and we also participate in development, such as Generative AI for Natural Language Processing by some startups, as well as data processing using AI in marketing. It is also evident in the healthcare sector, agriculture, and other sectors that I believe will continue to grow, and the use of AI will expand," he explained.

Deputy Minister Nezar Patria identified two patterns of regulating the use of AI technology. The difference in approach is influenced by the dynamics of the dialogue on Global AI Governance.

"Some try a horizontal approach, with an orientation more towards principles adopted by the European Union countries in AI development. There is also a vertical approach directly to sectors carried out by the United States and China," he explained.

According to Deputy Minister Nezar Patria, various countries worldwide are currently competing in the global race for AI development, led by the United States and China, as well as some European countries.

"We also see global concerns arising due to the risks of AI development for society in various sectors and aspects of people's lives," he clarified.

Deputy Minister Nezar Patria assured that the Indonesian government will always support AI development in Indonesia.

"In this regard, the Ministry of Communication and Information fully supports the development efforts of AI carried out by startup companies and various national and global technology companies operating in Indonesia," he concluded.
