The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) Invites Collaboration to Create a Safe Digital Ecosystem

Minister of Communication and Information Technology Budi Arie Setiadi has issued Circular Letter No. 9 of 2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics on December 19, 2023. The circular is expected to be the starting point for Indonesia to move towards a healthier, more productive, and safer governance.

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is striving to protect society from the negative impacts of Artificial Intelligence technology. One of the efforts made is the release of Circular Letter No. 9 of 2023 on Artificial Intelligence Ethics.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Technology Nezar Patria emphasizes the creation of a safe digital ecosystem and empowerment, requiring productive collaboration involving various elements of society. "I believe there are many excellent perspectives to make our digital ecosystem safer and more empowering. Of course, for business actors, academics, and those concerned with AI development," he said during the National AI Seminar: Strengthening Ethical Commitments in Artificial Intelligence Governance and Digital Economic Strengthening in Central Jakarta on Friday (19/01/2024).

Deputy Minister Nezar Patria hopes that the circular will be the starting point for Indonesia to move towards healthier, more productive, and safer governance. Therefore, Kominfo invites all parties to continue efforts in utilizing and developing technology to improve lives. "Let us together realize a productive, safe, and inclusive AI ecosystem for Indonesia. AI governance also needs to be formed to protect individuals from excessive privacy violations by companies and biases produced by the technology, ensuring that consumer rights are preserved," he invites.

Executive Director of ELSAM, Wahyudi Djafar, stated that a deeper understanding of the circular would enhance meaningful stakeholder engagement in the digital policy context, allowing them to participate meaningfully in the development of voluntary policies and principles.

"So that the policies produced by the state to respond to technology can be flexible," he emphasized.

According to Wahyudi, the drafting of the circular was a collaborative process and went well. Even his organization was actively involved in the drafting process.

"We provided recommendations that then gave rise to a number of principles, some of which have already been adopted in the circular," he explained.

The seminar, organized by ELSAM, IPP Atma Jaya, and Bisnis Indonesia, further discussed the background, objectives, developed principles, implementation strategies, and the direction of development of the circular, as well as strengthening commitments to stakeholders regarding AI governance.
