Digital Competitiveness of Indonesia Rises Six Places, Minister Budi Arie: National Digital Transformation Recognized Globally

According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Menkominfo), the increase in Indonesia's digital competitiveness is assessed based on two aspects: aggressive growth in investments in the telecommunications, banking, and venture capital sectors, and the growth of technology entrepreneurs supporting Indonesia's technological readiness for the future.

The national acceleration of digital transformation, as initiated by President Joko Widodo, has received appreciation from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD). In the World Digital Competitiveness Ranking (WDCR) report for 2023, Indonesia now holds the 45th position globally, an improvement from the 51st position in 2022.

Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie, stated that this is concrete evidence of success and global recognition for the accelerated national digital transformation. He mentioned that the rise to the 45th position in the world signifies the success of the digital transformation initiatives prepared by President Joko Widodo.

The IMD WDCR report, released in late 2023, compares the maturity of digital competitiveness across 64 countries. The research results from the Swiss institution show that Indonesia's digital competitiveness is superior to several other Asian countries such as India (ranked 49), the Philippines (59), and Mongolia (63). However, in the Southeast Asian region, Indonesia is still behind Singapore (ranked 3), Malaysia (33), and Thailand (35).

According to Menkominfo, Indonesia's success is evaluated based on two main aspects: aggressive growth in investments in the telecommunications, banking, and venture capital sectors, and the growth of technology entrepreneurs supporting Indonesia's technological readiness for the future.

"These two main factors have successfully boosted Indonesia's digital competitiveness," he emphasized.

In 2023, Indonesia's overall competitiveness rose to the 34th position globally, talent competitiveness rose to the 47th position, and Indonesia's economic sustainability was at the 19th position worldwide. Several cities in Indonesia were also recognized as global smart cities, including Jakarta (102), Medan (112), and Makassar (114).

The IMD WDCR report identified two factors that still need improvement for Indonesia's digital competitiveness to increase: education and training, and research and technology development. IMD also released the position of Indonesia's internet speed, which is ranked 62 out of 64 countries studied.

Minister Budi Arie highlighted the possibilities of technological development with increased internet speed. Therefore, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, along with the ecosystem, is making efforts to improve the national internet speed.

"I met with the ecosystem yesterday and continue to seek concrete solutions to improve internet speed in Indonesia," he said.

Minister Budi Arie affirmed that the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will continue to work hard and collaborate with the national digital ecosystem to make Indonesia a digital nation, aiming to achieve Indonesia Emas 2045.

"Of course, the achievements and successes obtained now are part of our efforts to make Indonesia a digital nation. We expect the full support of the entire national digital ecosystem to realize Indonesia Emas 2045 through the Indonesia Digital Vision 2045," he expressed.

The IMD WDCR 2023 report on digital competitiveness among 64 countries considers three main factors: knowledge, technology, and future readiness. The latest research results in 2023 noted a significant increase in Indonesia's digital competitiveness compared to the previous year. Even over the last five years, IMD mentioned that Indonesia's ranking has continuously risen by 11 positions. In 2019, Indonesia was at the 56th position, and now it has climbed to the 45th position globally.
