Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Urges Digital Platforms to Actively Combat Hoaxes in the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections

Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) Notes: From January to August 2024, 1,195 hoax issues related to the Presidential Election (Pilpres) have been found.

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology invites digital platform providers to actively participate in handling and eradicating fake news or hoaxes regarding the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections (Pilkada).

Director General of Public Information and Communication at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Prabunindya Revta Revolusi, stated that digital platforms have a significant responsibility in preventing the spread of hoaxes on their respective platforms.

"Hoaxes spreading in digital spaces are considered to have the potential to disrupt public trust in the democratic process in Indonesia. Platforms operating in our digital space must also take responsibility for the spread of hoaxes on their platforms," he said during the Forum on Strategic Roles of National Mass Media in Supporting Positive Reporting of the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections (FKK), held in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (04/09/2024).

According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology’s records, from January to August 2024, 1,195 hoax issues related to the Presidential Election (Pilpres) have been discovered. He added that hoax content is dangerous because it has the potential to affect public trust in political events, especially with the upcoming Simultaneous Regional Elections.

"These hoax issues are very dangerous, whether in the form of disinformation or malinformation. They can lead the public to have a distorted understanding of the political situation," emphasized Director General Prabu Revolusi.

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology will encourage digital platforms to be actively involved in filtering hoax content. Digital platforms possess the most appropriate technology to filter and monitor content that has the potential to divide the nation.

"We hope that digital platforms will take responsibility in this filtering process. We also hope that the construction of cyberspace does not stray too far from the reality of the physical world," said the Director General of Public Information and Communication at Kominfo.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto emphasized the crucial role of mass media in creating peaceful 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections.

"As one of the pillars of democracy, the mass media plays a significant role in ensuring the success of the 2024 elections. Therefore, we invite all journalists to collaborate in creating true democracy in Indonesia," he said.

The forum was attended by representatives of the Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, Chairman of the General Elections Commission (KPU), Mochammad Afifuddin, Press Council Member Totok Suryanto, and several leaders from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.
